How to Spend a Weekend in Bishkek

Bishkek is the capital of Kyrgyzstan, and if you find yourself staying here for a weekend, there are a number of interesting things to see and do to keep you busy. The spacious streets and green parks make it a pleasant place to explore, and you can see much of it on foot. Here are some of the highlights of the city.

 

 

Osh Bazaar

 

The Osh Bazaar is a fun place to start your exploration. If you are staying somewhere like the Hyatt Regency Bishkek, you will be able to reach the bazaar by local public transport such as the Marshrutkas, which are minibuses, or in a taxi.

 

Walk around this huge, bustling market and soak up the atmosphere. You can buy a wide range of local foods here from the numerous stalls, making it an excellent place to try some of the local cuisine. It's also a great place to pick up some cheap souvenirs like a felt hat.

 

 

Ala-Too Square

 

Ala-Too Square is the main square in the city and it is also worth a visit. It is the place where most of the festivals are held in the city, as well as the occasional demonstration. You can wander around and purchase goods from local vendors or admire the impressive fountains.

 

 

State Historical Museum

 

Right next to Ala-Too Square, you will find the State Historical Museum. This interesting museum houses various exhibits that change throughout the year, and it will provide you with a good overview of the history of the country and the city, including a glimpse of the communist era.

 

 

Eating Out

 

The food in Kyrgyzstan is very tasty, and you should make sure you visit some of the restaurants and try the local dishes. One meal to try is 'beshbarmak', which is the national dish. This is traditionally made with horse meat, although other meats are also used, and it is served with noodles.

 

Other dishes include 'shashlik', a grilled meat kebab eaten with bread; 'plov', which is a rice and meat and is a staple here; and samsas, which are like samosas and are available everywhere.

 

 

Head Outside the City

 

You can see most of the main city sights in just a couple of days, so head outside the city to discover the dramatic and beautiful landscape. For example, you could trek in the Tien Shan range and discover the beautiful mountains and alpine lakes.

 

Skiing is popular during the winter, mainly during November and December, and the Kyrgyz Alatau range is the best place to go. You can also arrange to go mountaineering, mountain biking, camping and canoeing.

Make sure you spend some time exploring Bishkek when you stay here for a weekend or longer. It won't take long to see the main sights, and you can see most of what you need to within a couple of days. After seeing the sights, make sure you tuck into some of the delicious local cuisine, or head outside the city as well to explore the dramatic landscape of the region.
