The capital of Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek is the gateway to the modern Republic of Kyrgyz. A fascinating country, Kyrgyzstan is bordered by Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and China and was on the network of trading routes known as the Great Silk Road. Annexed by Russia in 1864, it regained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

Bishkek is located where the Kazakh steppe meets the foothills of the majestic Tien-Shan Mountain range, set against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains and mountain lakes. Founded in 1878, it is a relatively modern city, largely Soviet built with wide avenues and numerous parks.

Within an hour's drive of Bishkek is the Ala Archa (juniper) Canyon, part of the Ala Archa National Park. This area of outstanding natural beauty is ideal for trekking and winter skiing. The Burana Tower is an 11th century minaret, well worth visiting.

Lake Issy Kul or Hot Lake is a large expanse of water, nestling between the mountains of Terskei Alatau and the Kungei Alatau. In spite of its high altitude, the lake never freezes and is surrounded by sandy beaches.

At the south-east end of the lake is the attractive town of Kara-Kol.
